Student Reports
How hard is the A?
A is doable but not automatic
The signal here is more do-the-work-and-you-should-be-fine than easy-A chatter. Students do not describe the A as automatic, but the evidence also does not paint grading as punishing.
Homework Load
Moderate homework load
Homework load looks moderate. The recurring signal is steady weekly work, but not a course that turns every assignment into a grind.
Lecture Load
Regular lecture load
Lectures matter here, but the evidence points to a fairly standard lecture burden rather than a course dominated by long or exceptionally dense lectures.
Strengths
Readings, films, or outside materials come up repeatedly as a real strength rather than filler.
Tradeoffs
There is no single dominant complaint theme, but the feedback is not uniformly glowing either.
Best fit for
Best for students who will engage with the materials instead of skimming everything.
Watch out for
A large share of the evidence comes from one instructor's version of the course, so this may not generalize cleanly.

Student Responses

Throughout this course, I developed several important skills and insights; however, I believe that some refinements to the course structure and delivery could significantly enhance the learning experience for a diverse student population. Specifically, I learned: Critical Thinking and Historical Analysis: The use of a traditional midterm and blue book exam helped me practice organizing and articulating my ideas under timed conditions, which is a valuable skill. However, this pencil-and-paper format feels somewhat outdated, particularly in a hybrid course setting with many adult learners who may not have engaged in such exams for years. Incorporating more modern and flexible assessment methods could better accommodate the varied backgrounds and needs of students. Exposure to Diverse Perspectives through Guest Speakers: The guest speakers contributed enriching perspectives that broadened my understanding of the course material. That said, a closer integration of these speakers’ content with the lecture material could create a more cohesive and impactful learning environment. Independent Learning and Adaptability: Due to limited communication regarding course expectations, I developed greater self-directed learning skills and took initiative to seek clarity and additional resources. While this was ultimately beneficial, clearer and more consistent communication could help students navigate the course more confidently.

Great insights by guest speakers who are/were participants of the government institutions that govern the national security realm.
Fall 2025 · Burke, Frances
Development of understanding of institutions outside of the department of war which I was familiar but not confident with. Developed a better understanding of interagency coordination and barriers to effective coordination.
Fall 2025 · Burke, Frances
I learned so much about US history of key events that I knew nothing about before. I also have a better insight into how I might have a career in policy in the future. Finally, I know where to go for more information if I want to learn more on this topic in the future.

I learned alot about the NSC and it's capabilities. The week focusing on the Vice President was extremely eye opening for me. It was helpful to learn about the current changes transitioning from Department of Defense to Department of War.
