Student Reports
How hard is the A?
A is doable but not automatic
The signal here is more do-the-work-and-you-should-be-fine than easy-A chatter. Students do not describe the A as automatic, but the evidence also does not paint grading as punishing.
Homework Load
Moderate homework load
Homework load looks moderate. The recurring signal is steady weekly work, but not a course that turns every assignment into a grind.
Lecture Load
Lighter lecture burden
Student comments describe this as more discussion-, seminar-, or workshop-driven than lecture-dependent. The lecture burden itself does not sound like the main source of friction.
Strengths
• Discussion is a clear strength; students repeatedly describe the class conversation as engaging and useful.
• Students repeatedly say the course teaches something concrete, whether that is content mastery, research skill, or a strong foundation.
Tradeoffs
• There is no single dominant complaint theme, but the feedback is not uniformly glowing either.
Best fit for
Best for students who will actually talk in class instead of sitting silent.
Watch out for
• A large share of the evidence comes from one instructor's version of the course, so this may not generalize cleanly.
Student Responses
I learned a lot about public policy which was something I hadn't focused on here at Duke.

I learned a lot about what arts policy was, from the history of it to how it relates to my everyday life. I also learned great project-based skills like time management and communication. Furthermore, I learned how to write a policy brief, which is something I didn't know how to do before.

Critical analysis of policies and institutions - i.e. considering how institutions are created and situated, and how this impacts the people attracted to this institution and how that institution is perceived

I was able to build knowledge in U.S. public policy, art and the intersection of both in a very engaging and practical way.

I learned a lot of subtle, overlooked concepts. Creative placemaking, the interplay of public/private/non-profit institutions, and this is the biggest thing: a greater appreciation of arts institutions & events around me. Before this class, I really didn't look to go to museums or art exhibits or dance performances. However, my positive experiences with these aforementioned things have motivated me to go to more events around campus and Durham. I think this is most notable with the performances in Page Auditorium. I will also say this course has helped me network/ reach out when working with my community partner. This was especially relevant when I wanted to include an extra component in the project and I had to gather the resources/data from different teams in the organization and outside.
